WELCOME TO THE AUSTRALIAN 20M RUN AEROBIC FITNESS CHALLENGE

How many 20 metre laps can you walk, shuffle, jog or run in 5 minutes?

The 20m Run is a simple, easy to administer, reliable, valid and discriminating test of aerobic fitness for children, ‘regular folks’, elite force personnel and athletes.

Based loosely on the well known ‘beep test‘ of aerobic fitness, all participants have to do is to see how many times they can walk, shuffle, jog or run between two lines 20m apart in 5 minutes.

This is a test of aerobic fitness that people can do at any time to check how metabolically fit they are.

It’s the test that should be included in all medical assessments of metabolic function, particularly for people who are over weight and out of shape, those with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure and people who are depressed.

All your doctor, fitness practitioner or allied health professional needs to do is take you out the back of the surgery, their consulting rooms or the gym and watch as you move forward and back between the lines.

Where this test should be used

The results of the test should be included in the report card of every school student from grade 4 up.

It’s the test that should be included on every corporate heath pre-service medical check up.

It’s the test the elite force personnel should be required to pass each year. If you ask, ‘What’s age got to do with it?’, the older you are the more time you’ve had to train!

The record so far is 60 laps for men and 55 for women. People in poor condition will struggle to get 20 laps. The lowest score recorded is 9 laps in 5 minutes. This makes the 20m run a discriminating test of aerobic fitness.

The 20m run challenge is open to school classes who will be able to see how they rank with like-minded individuals and groups around the world.
